Creating a Vibrato-Rise Patch Using BEAP (MAX)

Last Edited: Nov 13, 2023

This article will provide a step-by-step tutorial to create a vibrato-rise patch using BEAP. This means that this is not going to be a standard vibrato patch. The rise in pitch will lead to a faster vibrato.

What Is Vibrato?

Vibrato is a rapid but slight variation in pitch while holding a not-for-longer duration. It can be produced using an instrument, voice, or both.   Here is a step-by-step tutorial on how to create a Vibrato rise patch using BEAP:

STEP 1: Pull out the following modules from BEAP and alter their settings as shown.

There will be a small 'b' symbol on the left side of the screen, which you can click to search for the following modules:

  • Oscillator

  • Choose the 'sine' wave.
  • Set CV2 to 10.2 %
  • Offset to 9.47 %
  • Keyboard

    No change in settings.
  • ADSR

  • Attacks: 50 ms
  • Decay: 50ms
  • Sustain: 70%
  • Release: 500ms
  • VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier)

    No change in settings.
  • Stereo

    No change in settings.
  • CV LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator)
  • Phase: 0.00
  • Rate: 6.44Hz
  • CV Amount: 100 %

Importance of the 'CV LFO'

As the name suggests, this is a low-frequency oscillator with a CV input. This provides the vibrato to the sound by going into the CV2 input of the Oscillator. The 1v/oct output of the keyboard goes into the CV input of the LFO, hence controlling the intensity of vibrato via the pitch change.

STEP 2: Patch all the modules according to the following instructions, referring to the picture below

  • Put the 1v/oct out of the keyboard into the CV1 input of the Oscillator.
  • Put the 1v/oct out of the keyboard into the CV input of the CV LFO.
  • The gate out of the keyboard goes into the ADSR Gate.
  • The signal out of the CV LFO goes into the CV2 input of the Oscillator.
  • The oscillator signal goes into the signal in of VCA.
  • The signal out of ADSR goes into CV in of VCA.
  • The VCA output goes into the stereo's left and right inputs.

The patch is ready; as soon as you press the keys on the keyboard, the vibrato starts; the higher the pitch, the more intense the vibrato becomes.
