Dream Trance

Last Edited: Dec 28, 2023

The international dance industry experienced a climax for the early trance subgenre, Dream Trance, between 1995 and 1998. It collided with the first time trance reached the mainstream media. House music has been known to be significantly influenced by the term "dream." Hence, the subgenre is occasionally called dream house or dream dance. Dream trance is the earliest and most basic variation of the 1992–1994 progressive house movement. It also impacted many emerging psytrance artists, most notably Infected Mushroom.

The Saturday Night Massacre

In the 1990s, there was a rise in rave culture and nightclubbing among young adults in Italy. This caused a weekly death trend due to car accidents involving clubgoers driving across the country overnight. They often fell asleep at the wheel due to strenuous dancing, intoxication, and drug use. Dream trance emerged as a reaction to these social pressures. People named this phenomenon the "Saturday night massacre." By mid-1996, nearly 2000 people had died because of this. As a result, Robert Miles produced "Children," which is considered one of the genre's pioneering tunes. DJs like Miles decided to play slower, more relaxing music to close a night's performance, counteracting the fast-paced, repetitive tunes that came before. These fast night-life songs now stirred police and victims' parents' approbation.

Dream Trance and Ibiza Trance

Ibiza trance and dream trance are closely related as both genres emerged simultaneously. They often feature strong similarities. Some include similar BPM ranges, Latin-influenced guitar melodies (mainly the Spanish guitar), and laid-back atmospheres. Dream trance is a subgenre of Ibiza trance. Ibiza trance may occasionally feature Downtempo or even Breakbeat-inspired beats. However, dream trance is characterized by a more "cinematic" and dramatic sound. This is the primary distinction between these two types of trance music.

Characteristics of this Subgenre

Appealing and profound melodies are essential to this genre. Trance musicians often first perform melodies on an acoustic instrument (piano, violin, saxophone, etc.). Then, they process the samples into an electronic rhythm structure. The tunes are described as having a "dreamy" quality, which means they tend to influence the listener's state of mind; this is where the term comes from. Instead of using authentic trance rhythms combined into 4-to-4 bass patterns with a particularly repetitive sound, Dream Trance uses dance beats comparable to those of the Eurodance and dance-pop genres. The music emphasizes the melody more than the rhythm, leading to a piece reminiscent of trance and a beat reminiscent of house. The rhythmic structure is also relatively straightforward. Producers form these songs entirely using instrumental strings based on various notes, which gives the songs their shape. If you enjoyed this article, please check out these similar articles:
