5 Tips for Daily Growth as a Musician

Last Edited: Dec 4, 2023

Do you feel stuck as a musician? Do you find yourself repeating yourself? Do you think that your musical growth is stagnant? If the answer to all these questions is ‘YES,’ then believe me, ‘YOU ARE NOT ALONE.’ Even the biggest names in the music industry feel the same way. It is not uncommon for a musician to feel stuck and demotivated. But guess what! There is a way out. Here are five things you can do differently to make you feel better and help you grow daily as a musician.

1. Learn Something New Every Day

After a few years of playing an instrument, you commonly play the same things repeatedly. Getting out of your comfort zone and learning something new daily is the key. It can be as simple as a chord or as complicated as a dream theatre guitar solo. The important thing is to push your limits and learn something new every day.   By doing this:

  • You will be more motivated to play the instrument.
  • You will find the new stuff imbibing in your musicality, making you a better musician.

2. Make New Music and Complete It

Often, as musicians, we hate everything we write and, hence, never complete it. We keep waiting for that fantastic song or melody, but guess what! It never comes. The key is to write anything and complete it, too. Subsequently, it doesn’t matter if it is the worst song in the world. Thomas Alva Edison failed 1000 times before he invented the light bulb. The only possible way for him to know he failed was to complete those 1000 experiments. If you never conduct your experiments (Songs), then you will never fail and hence never succeed. So, guys, keep making music. It will happen one day.

3. Transcribe

The best way to learn something is to see how the masters do it and repeat it.   Anytime you feel uninspired to write something new or overwhelmed to learn something new, start transcribing. I cannot stress enough how important and valuable this skill is. Furthermore, the more you will transcribe, the more you will see those skills in your musicality. Take any legendary musician and half of their life was transcribing other people’s music.   It doesn’t matter what you transcribe. Just transcribe.

4. Put Your Stuff Out

Imagine a scenario where you have become the world’s best guitarist, sitting in your small room, but the world doesn’t know about it. There is nobody who has said so, and hence, you feel demotivated and leave playing guitar. Motivation is something that we need to keep ourselves going. This is what the audience provides when they listen to your music. Someone’s appreciation for your art is invaluable. Furthermore, it is the force that inspires you to make more art. It would be best if you never were afraid to put your stuff out. The more you do so, the more confident you become. You also learn what can be better and keep working towards it. Not putting anything out can put your music motivation at a standstill and negatively impact you.   Don’t be afraid; be vulnerable, and hit the launch button.

5. Take Time off Every Day

Take a walkout, play badminton, do photography, learn to design, do anything, but always remember to take some time out and divert your mind. Your mind and body need to change. Sitting in front of the computer for hours can be frustrating and hurt your health.   Ultimately, doing something else entirely, sometimes every day, can improve your efficiency and yield better results.
